Jimi's sound in a new guise
The classic, British 60's sound, which is somehow eternally relevant, was the starting point when Paul and his team set about developing the HDRX series. This has resulted in a circuit that has been nicknamed "Authentic Hendrix", as one has had access to one of the legend's personal amps, which he reportedly played on at Woodstock.
With a focus on making the treble appear clear and present without being harsh, the HDRX50 delivers plenty of aggressive attitude while also being gentle as a lamb. The HDRX50 is equipped with two EL34H tubes in the power amplifier, which are considered by most to be the best for the purpose. At the same time, the HDRX50 has a 100W power supply, which actually makes it sound more like a 100W, while being uncannily quiet.
The HDRX50 is also equipped with a 3-band TMB "Tone Stack" eq, a two-way "Bright" knob, a High/Mid gain knob and presence control. These controls emulate the model pretty closely. Internally, the channels are bridged with separate bass and treble controls for each channel, which eliminates the need for a jumper cable (which you had to do in the old days). This makes it easier and more flexible to hit exactly the distortion and tone you want by mixing the lead and bass channels. With the Master Volume, you can control the power amplifier part very precisely, which eliminates a possible volume attenuator.
PRS has also designed matching closed-back enclosures for the HDRX50, which compliment the amplifier perfectly. Here we find Celestion G12H-75 Creamback units, which match the power of the amplifier perfectly. The exclusive design and use of the very best materials make the set appear as an eminent mixture of classic guitar sound and visual beauty.
