Meet the SH-4d Synthesizer - a powerful desktop tool with a convenient workflow and advanced tools for designing sounds on the fly.
Create spontaneous musical moments with 11 OSC models, a multitimbral pattern sequencer, extensive effects, and plenty of polyphony. And with the complete panel, dynamic controls, motion recording and more, you can create evolving sounds and compositions as quickly as the ideas come. Equally suitable for studio, stage and on the go, the SH-4d is an incredibly versatile synth that demands inspiration from the moment you turn it on.
Portable dream machine.
The SH-4d is a new kind of Roland SH synth that catalyzes creativity in every way. Move the knobs and sliders and conjure up tones, soundscapes and ideas that will keep you energized for hours. And with the portable, battery-powered design, you can develop great music anytime, anywhere.
All the models in one box.
Eleven OSC Models give you a wide range of sound-creating powers at your disposal, from vintage analog synths and PCM-based sounds to advanced digital sounds. There is also a flexible drum synthesizer with rich tone shaping options for to create custom kits from scratch.
Classical.
The new SH-4d model is inspired by the legendary Roland SH synths and lets you create cool vintage analog sounds with up to four different waveforms. Or choose the SH-3D model, which swaps out an additional LFO for an additional LFO for the fourth part. There's also a jammable Chord Model for creating complex chord changes with single notes and simple slider movements.
The future.
Create sharp modern textures with the Cross FM model with two operators. Develop complex morphing tones with the powerful Wavetable model. Or use Drawing Model to design your own waveforms and create sounds you've never heard before.
Modulated.
Create bold metallic textures with Ring Model, which allows for deep sound shaping via crossfade parameters, waveshapes, tuning, and more. And with the Sync model, it's easy to create oscillator sync tones with evolving harmonic richness and powerful envelope control.
Legacy.
The SH-4d is also filled with influential voices from Roland's storied past. Create classic analog flavors with the authentic sounds of the SH-101 and JUNO-106 models. And spice up your tracks with the PCM model and its wide selection of sample-based sounds from our historic library.
Rhythm.
The dedicated rhythm section contains 49 preset kits and 64 slots for storing your own kits. You get 26 instruments in one kit, each with up to two layered waveforms, dedicated EQs, and a range of synthesis tools to shape sounds to perfection.
Sonic explorer.
The SH-4d puts everything you need for professional sound design at your fingertips with instantly accessible controls and a smart, dynamic interface that lets you work at the speed your imagination allows.
Full panel.
Create tones and perform in real time with 32 knobs, four sliders, and a large number of multi-function buttons. The LCD screen, sliders and buttons automatically reconfigure their functions to follow the selected mode, so you don't get stuck in menus that slow down your creative flow.
Grab-and-go synth controls.
Whether you're building tones or creating patterns, the Filter, Amp, and LFO sections are always ready to shape what you're working on. The newly developed ladder filter offers multi-mode operation with interactive Drive and Resonance, full envelope control, and an independent HPF for instant tightening of any sound. The amp section provides ADSR and fast level adjustment, while the deep LFO section has many waveform types, fades, filters, pitch and more.
Create sounds quickly
The dynamic OSC section puts the most important creative parameters within easy reach. Create sounds from scratch by starting from a clean slate. Or you can download preset and user-based sound libraries for each model and start tweaking from there.
Enter the Matrix.
With the powerful Matrix section, you can use LFOs, envelopes, or external MIDI sources to modulate Model parameters. You can easily set assignments by grabbing buttons and dive deep into detailed settings via the intuitive menu structure.
Music that moves.
Among its many tricks, the SH-4d has built-in motion sensors that allow you to pick up the synth and adjust the sounds with physical movements while you play. Use D-Motion to control two assignable parameters for the X/Y axis. Or call upon the unique Visual Arpeggio to shape note patterns via fun interactive displays.
Multitimbral sequencing.
The SH-4d sequencer is always ready to transform your sound ideas into compact loops or extended compositions. The tactile interface works in conjunction with your sound design features, making it easy to discover new tones and textures while playing patterns. With up to 60 polyphonic tones, you have enough power to realize complete musical ideas in the box.
Inspiration machine.
The SH-4d offers fast Roland sequencing with four synth parts and a dedicated rhythm part. Use two different step recording modes to enter up to eight notes per step, or real-time recording mode to record your performance as you play. Fine-tune note velocity and other settings with detailed list editing. And manipulate patterns with reverse/random playback, first step/last step, and other powerful performance features.
Mix and mute.
In Pattern mode, the SH-4d's OSC section and LCD screen transform into a mixer, allowing you to fine-tune levels and arrange on the spot. Control part volume, muting, and panning, and see effect send levels at a glance. When not in Pattern mode, you can mute/unmute parts and individual pattern steps with quick button presses.
Motion capture.
Switch to real-time recording to capture knob and slider movements when you're ready. If you want to fine-tune your moves, record another pass or open the list editor and start tweaking. If you want to start over, you can easily delete all movements in a pattern with one command.
Tools for surprise.
The SH-4d provides plenty of extra options for adding color and detail to your creations. Set probability amounts per step to invite unpredictability, and add substeps for flames and ratchets. And along with the Visual Arpeggio function, there's a traditional arpeggiator for capturing moving note patterns while you record.
Massive effects.
The SH-4d is loaded with famous Roland effects to frost, finesse, coarsen, or distort your tones and patterns. Using focused controls and dynamic menus, you can quickly call up effect types, adjust parameters, set send levels, and more while you create and perform.
MFX to the max.
Each sequencer part has a dedicated MFX processor with 95 effect types for you to explore. From filter, drive and lo-fi effects to delays, pitch shifters, phasers, flangers and the famous JUNO chorus, you're sure to find what you need for any style.
Global color.
The SH-4d features shared chorus, delay and reverb effects with send controls for each part and top-level buttons for quick access to on/off. There's also an MFX processor for the pattern output, as well as a system EQ and compressor for fine-tuning the overall mix.
Stay in the flow, wherever you go.
The SH-4d packs a ton of versatility into a portable design that fits any creative scenario.
Bring your friends.
The SH-4d excels as a sound module and controller in a more comprehensive hardware setup, with 5-pin MIDI I/O, a dedicated clock input, and a 3.5mm stereo audio input for an AIRA Compact, Roland Boutique, or other external instrument.
Powerful production partner.
With the integrated USB-C audio/MIDI interface, you can record 12 discrete audio channels directly into your DAW. The main panel buttons, D-Motion and Visual Arpeggio also send CC messages, allowing you to use the SH-4d as a fully featured control surface for software instruments and MIDI hardware.
Your mobile synthesizer studio.
The SH-4d runs on a standard USB-C phone charger or AA batteries for up to four hours. The rugged, portable design lets you create non-stop, whether you're in the studio, on the go, or sitting at home in the living room.
